First Graphene has received its first production purchase order from Pacific Urethanes for PureGRAPH, marking a new commercial customer and a new application for the material: enhancing fire-retardant performance in polyurethane formulations aimed at Australia’s mining and resources sector. The order follows successful development work and moves the application into commercial-scale manufacture.
Polyurethane is widely used throughout mining for its wear resistance and durability, across applications including screening media, wear liners, slurry systems, conveyor components, pumps, piping, chute and hopper liners, seals, and protective coatings. Graphene’s highly planar structure can act as a barrier within the polymer matrix, restricting heat and decomposition-product transfer and supporting the formation of a more protective char layer during fire exposure – research on graphene-enhanced polyurethane has reportedly shown improvements in heat release, thermal degradation, and smoke generation. Pacific Urethanes is incorporating PureGRAPH into its formulations to strengthen this fire-retardant characteristic while preserving the mechanical and wear properties that have driven polyurethane’s widespread mining-industry adoption.
