ROTOBOOST, a Finnish energy transition technology company, has received a strategic investment from Aramco Ventures, the venture capital arm of Saudi Aramco. The company will use the funding to scale its methane pyrolysis technology, which splits methane and other hydrocarbons into low-carbon hydrogen and solid carbon materials, including graphene.
ROTOBOOST’s process, which it calls thermal-catalytic decomposition, uses a molten catalyst. The solid carbon it produces is sold as graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), which the company describes as crumpled, three-dimensional sheets with meso- and macropores. The company says selling the carbon ties decarbonization to revenue, and that the process emits far less than steam reforming and uses less energy than water electrolysis.
