Perpetuus Advanced Materials has announced the results of an industrial production assessment of its surface-engineered graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) masterbatch in truck and bus radial (TBR) tire production. The company says the masterbatch eliminated two mixing stages, cut the assessed mixing time by about 21% and reduced electricity use across the mixing sequence by about 45%, a saving of about 165 kWh per metric ton of compound.
Perpetuus applied the results to a reference mixing line making 10,000 tons of compound a year and estimates direct process savings of about US$240,000 a year before the cost of the masterbatch: about $165,000 in electricity (at $0.10 per kWh), $45,000 in reduced carbon black loss and $30,000 in labor. The time saved would also free mixer capacity for about 2,000 more tons of compound a year, or about 40,000 more TBR tires, which the company values at up to $8 million a year in additional gross tire production at an illustrative $200 per tire. At $0.20 per kWh, the electricity saving on the same line would be about $330,000 a year.
