Graphene Composites has launched the new GC Patrol Shield, which it sells under the GC Shield brand. The company says the shield was verified to stop rifle and shotgun threats at 1 inch from its edge. The NIJ and ASTM standards require this only at 2 inches, and treat any shot closer to the edge than that as an “unfair hit” that does not count against the shield. According to GC, that excluded zone runs around the whole perimeter and makes a conventional shield’s protective area about 30% smaller than its strike face.
The new model was verified in June 2026 under the full ASTM E3347 conditioning process, including temperature shock, water immersion and high- and low-temperature preparation. An independent ISO-qualified NIJ laboratory did the testing, and the Safety Equipment Institute verified the results. GC says no other shield has been verified to ASTM for shotgun threats at 2 inches, let alone 1 inch.
